Privacy Policy

We take data privacy seriously. Your trust is important to us, and we are transparent about how we collect, use, and protect your data. We have designed our app and website with privacy as a core principle, so your information is handled responsibly and securely.

All Users

How We Use Your Data: We use your voice only to check your recitation while you recite. We use your feedback messages to improve the app and to fix what you report. We do not sell, trade, or share your data with third parties for commercial purposes. Our app contains no advertisements, and we do not use your data for targeted advertising or marketing.

Data Security and Third-Party Services: We take reasonable measures to protect your information. However, no method of data transmission over the internet is 100% secure. The only service we use from someone else is Cloudflare, which carries the traffic between you and our server. The Quran text, fonts, translations and recordings in the app come from sources we name in the app's Credits screen. The app fetches them from our own server, so those sources do not see you.

Your Rights: If you have written to us, you can request an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you, except for data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Children's Privacy: Our app is currently designed for adult users. If we expand it for children in the future, we will add the necessary safeguards and update this policy accordingly.

Changes to This Policy: We may update this policy from time to time, and we will notify users of any significant changes. When Nureen is registered, we will add a donations feature and update this policy to reflect any privacy implications at that time.

Contact: For questions about privacy, please contact us at [email protected].

Beta Testers

What Data We Collect: We have a beta testing version on our developer website for a small group of testers. The demo of the trainer on our website works in the same way, so this section covers anyone who uses it. The checker runs on a server we operate in the United Kingdom, reached through Cloudflare. We process data in line with GDPR. The voice of beta testers is sent to our server while they recite, checked there, and discarded as soon as the check is done. We do not keep recordings. If you send us feedback through the app, we keep only the message you typed, and only the Nureen team reads it.

How Long We Retain Your Data: Your voice is not stored, it is discarded immediately after the check is done. Feedback messages are kept until we have acted on them. You may request deletion of a feedback message at any time.

The Nureen phone app

The Nureen phone app checks your recitation on your phone. Your voice is never sent to us or to anyone else. If you press "Send report" on a word, the app sends us that report. It holds the word, what the checker wrote for your recitation, your own mark and any note you type. A report holds no audio, no name, no email address and no device number. We keep reports only to find and fix words the checker gets wrong. We keep a report for at most 90 days, then delete it. The app also plays recitations and lesson clips from our server. Those requests carry nothing about you.

Terms of Use

These terms say what is ours, what belongs to others, and what we ask of you. Most people use Nureen exactly as we hope, and these lines are for the few who might not.

Free to Use: The Nureen apps are free, and we intend to keep them free. If a feature ever needs paid cloud processing, we may ask for a small contribution for that feature, and we will say so before you use it. We will look for sponsors first so that we do not have to ask.

What Belongs to Nureen: Nureen the coach, her name, her lantern and her lines; the design and art of the apps and games and their way of teaching; the puzzle mode; and the code we wrote. You may use them in the apps as much as you like. You may not copy them into another product, sell them, or present them as your own.

What Belongs to Others: The Quran, the text, the fonts, the tajweed colouring, the translations, the transliteration, the recitations, the surah introductions and the speech models come from others and are used under their own terms. Each is named in the app's Credits screen with a link to its source. We do not change the Quran's text or the reciters' recordings, and you may not either. If you take that material out of the apps, its makers' terms apply.

Improve With Us: If you would like to improve Nureen, fix something, translate something or build on it, contact us at [email protected] and do it with us. Anything contributed stays free in the apps for everyone. It is a sadaqah jariyah and we welcome the community to take part!

The Checker Is an Aid, Not a Teacher: The recitation check listens with a speech model and compares what it heard with the page. It is a technology that is 1 to 6% of the time wrong depending on your speed and clarity. It can miss a mistake and it can mark a correct word as wrong. Treat its verdict as a second opinion as it is intended to supplement a teacher, not to replace them. We recommend when working on your own to review and correct the verdict manually when you notice it made a mistake. You can also report mistakes and we will work on improving the model, but realize that the model will never become as good as a certified quran teacher.

What We Ask of You: Use the apps for learning. Do not try to break them, flood them, take them apart to sell, or use Nureen's name for anything we did not make.

No Promises We Cannot Keep: The apps are given as they are. We work to keep them running and right, and we are not liable for what a mistake in them costs you, beyond what the law does not let us exclude. These terms are under Dutch law.
